The audience normally arrives shortly before the fireworks.

We arrive much earlier.

On the day of a display, one of the first jobs is checking the firing area and confirming that everything is as expected.

The equipment then has to be brought onto the site and the firing positions established.

The fireworks are prepared and positioned according to the display design, and the electronic firing equipment is connected and checked.

Safety areas also have to be maintained so members of the public cannot enter the firing area.

While all this is happening, we’ll often be coordinating with the organiser, venue staff or event team.

As display time approaches, final checks are made and conditions are assessed.

Then comes the strange part.

After hours of preparation…

The entire display may be over in just a few minutes.

Once the audience has gone back inside or the event continues, our work isn’t finished.

The firing site still has to be checked and equipment cleared.

Professional fireworks displays involve much more than simply arriving and pressing a button.

But when you hear the reaction from the crowd after the finale, those hours of preparation are worth it.
